Book Description:

“To label this a zombie book would be a false pretense . . . this is so much more than that. What you start out with and what you end up with are very different, and those twists and turns in the middle will make your heart beat faster over and over again."-- Colossal Pop

It's all fun and games until someone ends up undead.

Though Layla reluctantly returns home to rural Hamletville after a desperate call from her psychic grandmother, she could never have anticipated the horror of what Grandma Petrovich has foreseen. The residents of Hamletville will need Layla's help if they are to survive the zombie apocalypse that's upon them. But that is not the only problem. With mankind silenced, it soon becomes apparent that we were never alone. As the beings living on the fringe seek to reclaim power, Layla must find a way to protect the ones she loves or all humanity may be lost.

'Layla, Grandma needs you to come home,' my grandmother’s voice, thick with Russian accent, came across through static.

From those words on there was no way I could put this book down.

I keep thinking that maybe one day authors will run out of ideas on the zombie topic. There’s romance, action, and adventure like no other between the pages of some of my favorite zombie novels. There are some authors who take my favorite genre, dystopian/post-apocalyptic, and infuse it with zombies. Some authors just don't get it, but others like Rhiannon Frater and Jonathan Maberry, really know how to write a zombie book. And now after reading The Harvesting, I can put Melanie in the same group. If you are looking for a non stop, action packed book with not just zombies but also paranormal events happening, then you will love this book.

Layla, the main character is a strong, independent, leader right from the beginning. Melanie made me feel like I knew Layla. Her character building of not only Layla, but the secondary characters was superb. Layla was a professor in Washington DC. She was called home with those bone chilling words from her grandmother, when she senses some strange events about to take place. Grandmother gave Layla her magic mushroom tea to spark her psychic abilities like her own.Very soon after this strange events begin, as towns people start turning into zombies. With her background in medieval battle tactics and her skill with weapons, Layla soon becomes the leader of the survivors.

After a few months some strangers from an island with a boat and a promise to carry them across and let them live in their safe haven, a luxury hotel. Layla senses this is not right but goes with them because she has sworn to protect them. From there you'll have to read for yourself. I don't want to spoil it for you but you definitely need to read this book. There is so much more to it than just zombies. Melanie spins an incredible tale that pulls you in and makes you keep turning the pages to see what happens next until you are done with the book and are looking for the next one. Melanie also gives you a taste of what's to come in the next book to keep you wanting more. I can't wait for the next one...more Layla and we find out more about Cricket.
