Welcome to the Darkness(ebook)
by L.M. Justus
Series: Darkness Trilogy, #1
Publication date: August 5th 2013
Genre: YA Paranormal
Synopsis:
A typical teenager, seventeen-year-old Reed Hennessy doesn’t realize how lucky he is to lead a normal life until he loses everything, including his humanity. The attacker who slaughters his family and destroys their home turns out to be a vampire, a creature Reed had considered a myth.
Now a vampire himself, but with the unique ability to walk in sunlight, Reed struggles in the dark underworld he didn’t even know existed. His only two allies in his fight to stay alive are his reluctant mentor, Nathaniel, a vampire with over two hundred years’ worth of emotional baggage, and Sarah, a rookie cop with a secret ability of her own.
Together, Reed and his companions face a harrowing, cross-country journey before stumbling into a plot which could mean the end of everything for humans and vampires alike.
First off, Welcome To The Darkness is not the usual book that I sign up to review. And honestly I didn't know that I did. (Sorry Giselle) But I had a little time in my reading schedule so I thought "What the heck?" Right? Vampires...I 'll just give it a try. Then I started reading and I never had time to think about it again. No email telling Giselle I didn't sign up :) or that I just didn't want to read it. There just was no time! This book from the first sentence went gang busters and NEVER slowed down! Just like this first line...
"One Sunday in late October, I was in my room pretending to do homework when my father's scream ripped through the air, followed closely by my mother's."
YOU SEE?!?!
WOW! Justus jumped in with both feet and never quit running! This book is told from 3 different POV's. Reed the "main character" is your typical high school student.who has a few issues going on. A vampire killed his family and turned him into one. But unlike "normal" vampires, he has the ability to survive things that other vampires can't. And these abilities have caused the other vampires to take an interest in Reed. He teams up with Sarah, a young police officer with an ability of her own, and Nathaniel, an amusing old vampire. Their adventures across the country, keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you reading. I love the way Justus flips back and forth telling the story through all three of their eyes. Each one has different thoughts and feelings about Reed and Sarah's abilities and I enjoyed reading them all. The romance between Reed and Sarah was so sweet and just enough to see how much they were beginning to care for each other.
Reed has to survive in a world that now has changed. With the help of Sarah and Nathaniel, he has to exist in a world that now involves monsters that he never knew existed before. How will Reed ever get over the death of his family? And how will he keep that human side to him and not give over to the vampire side? This is a must read book for vampire lovers! This is full of action and twists and turns. You don't want to stop flipping pages until you get to the end. And then you are looking for the next one. I look forward to seeing how Reed, Sarah, and Nathaniel get along in the next book and where their abilities and adventures take them next. Read it you will love it! I was privileged enough to read the ARC provided by the author. Great book!
