THE PARANORMAL IN HOLD TIGHT

Embrace, book one in the series, was all about the Powers, and much like Madison did in the book I had spent a lot of time researching witchcraft. I then put my own spin on it by having a witch’s powers fueled not only by natural, but by their emotions. I gave magic a taste and smell—chocolate covered strawberries scent the air when Madison uses positive emotions to fuel her powers while the smell of copper taints the air when she uses anger, hatred and other negative emotions. Another characteristic of those who possess the Powers is that their magic collide when they touch, creating an actual spark much like static electricity. Isaac uses the latter to his advantage, shaking hands with someone in order to know if the person he’s talking to is like him. It’s this same attribute that has made kissing Madison a challenge.

I enjoyed bending and twisting what I knew about witchcraft to create an intriguing world for Madison and her friends, and the Powers are only the beginning. In Hold Tight, Madison’s working on mastering her powers. She’s come a long way since Embrace, but has an even longer way to go before she fully understands everything there is to know about the supernatural world around her. Spiteful classmates are the least of her worries in book two, which introduces Fae.

There’s a lot of lore about faeries. For instance, did you know that there are dozens of different types of faeries? From brownies to sprites some of these creatures help humans while others wish to destroy them. And the lore of who can see the Fae varies as much as does what they look like.

The faeries in Hold Tight can blend in with humans by donning a glamour. They’re beautiful, alluring, vengeful, and they survive by drawing energy from nature, getting the greatest fix from humans. Isaac describes them perfectly: devious creatures that will twist your words to their advantage.

Too bad Madison didn’t heed his warning. Of course, if she had Hold Tight wouldn’t exist.
