Matt Archer: Monster Hunter (Matt Archer #1)
by Kendra C. Highley

Matt Archer, an ordinary freshman living in Montana, discovers something unusual on a camping trip with his uncle. Monsters are real. And living in his backyard.

But that's not the half of it...throw in a mystical knife, a covert military unit of soldiers dedicated to eliminating walking nightmares, and a prophecy about a dark war, and Matt finds himself in a job he never imagined: monster hunter.

All this insanity will leave him wondering which is tougher--killing monsters, or asking Ella Mitchell for a date.

Kendra C. Highley lives in north Texas with her husband and two children. She also serves as staff to two self-important and high-powered cats. This, according to the cats, is her most important job.
Kendra believes chocolate is a basic human right, running a 10k is harder than it sounds, and that everyone should learn to drive a stick-shift. She loves monsters, vacations, baking and listening to bad electronica.

(*Yeah…not really. We’ll let the scientists handle that part.)

Matt is just an ordinary teenager from a single family home with his mom, older brother, and sister. Matts uncle Mike was the family male role model since his dad was never around.  Mike was military special ops. One a camping trip they are attacked by a monster and Matt picking up the only weapon he could find kills the monster to save his uncle.Unbeknownst to him, he had picked up his uncles special knife wielded by magic. This knife only had one power - to kill monsters and now Matt was the choosen one to use it. Being only 14 that proved to be a little challenging. His uncle takes him to a military base to train him for his monster hunting future.
I was impressed with Matt right from the start. The story line was awesome and I can see every middle age kiddo out there reading this and thinking how much fun it would be to wield a magic sword to kill monsters. Every hunt Matt went on I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened. Matt's dreams (or nightmares) gave us additional insight to the story. It kept me wondering if what he was dreaming was the future for Matt.  I recommend this book to MG/YA and up who like a fast paced fantasy thriller! This book is definitely a book for all ages. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series as soon as I can!
