BLOG TOUR [Top 10 List] The Ark by Laura Liddell Nolen

The Ark
by Laura Liddell Nolen
Published by: HarperVoyager
Publication date: March 26th 2015
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

Synopsis:
There’s a meteor headed for Earth, and there is only one way to survive.

With her criminal record, sixteen-year-old Char is never going to get a place on an Ark, one of the five massive bioships designed to protect Earth’s survivors. The Arks are reserved for the real goody-goodies, like Char’s mom, dad, and brother, all of whom have long since turned their backs on her.

With Earth on the brink of destruction, Char must use all her tricks of the trade to swindle her way into outer space, where she hopes to reunite with her family, regardless of whether they want to see her or not.

Once she arrives on the North American Ark, Char discovers that the remnants of humanity haven’t achieved the egalitarian utopia they’d planned for. For starters, the “Officers of the Peace” are anything but peaceful, especially since stealing a spot on an Ark is a crime punishable by death…

Top 10 Favorite Book Quotes

1.  "It must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays."
Arthur Dent. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. This one’s on the list because I know exactly how he feels. Also, this book is fantastic. Sci fi comedy for the win.

2.  "My days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."
Malcolm Reynolds. Figured I’d put it out there right at the beginning: I’m cheating. This is a television show, not a book, and it was written by Joss Whedon. Firefly. Go forth and view happily.

3. "You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back."
Vincent Freeman (Gattaca) There I go again, cheating. Although this one’s a movie. It’s as good as science fiction ever got.

4.  “All girls your age are witches.”
Finn in Thorn Jack by Katherine Harbour. This scene in particular shows the power of being young and innocent.

5.  "We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in a while. How long is it since you were really bothered? About something important, about something real?" (Fahrenheit 451)

6. I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.”
Sonnet XVII, by Pablo Neruda. This one might not be a real book either, since it’s a poem. But it’s one of the best quotes I’ve ever read about a love that perseveres in spite of brokenness.

7.   "Science is magic that works."
Kurt Vonnegut, Cat's Cradle. This comes up more often than you might think, when you’re writing sci-fi.

8.   Wash: "Psychic, though? That sounds like something out of science fiction."
Zoe: "We live in a spaceship, dear."
Firefly again! I love the self-awareness of this quote, as well as how it subtly develops the relationship between Zoe and her husband Wash. She might be my favorite female sci-fi character ever.

9.   It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.
George Orwell, 1984. This is the greatest opening line of all time, and one of the best sci-fi quotes ever. The reader doesn’t know how wrong everything is yet, but something’s definitely off.

10. “You mean old books?"
"Stories written before space travel but about space travel."
"How could there have been stories about space travel before --"
"The writers," Pris said, "made it up.”

Phillip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Besides coming from one of the finest and most celebrated pieces of sci-fi ever written, this quote is meaningful to me because I write and read sci-fi, and my book is about space travel.

Ten Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Wrote a Novel

Thank you so much for inviting me to share on your blog! I’m Gina Azzi and I recently self-published my first novel Corner of Ocean and Bay.

Here are ten things I wish someone told me before I wrote a novel:

1.It’s OK not to have all the answers. They’ll come to you in time.
2.Your best ideas come from the most unlikely places – and in very surprising moments.
3.Honest friends are more important than friends who don’t want to hurt your feelings.
4.Have several people read your book – before you send it to the editor.
5.The cover is incredibly important.  Yes, people do judge a book by its cover – it’s true!
6.You don’t have to accept every suggestion someone offers on how to improve your novel – the ultimate decision to accept or reject a change is yours. But you should always listen first.
7.Be open and receptive to criticism – you’re characters may grow a bit more, your ideas may develop, etc. – if you are open to understanding the perspectives of others.
8.Some days, the writing will not come. And it’s ok. (Other days, it will flow. These days are awesome!).
9.Your characters are not you. Or your friends. Allow them to form their own identities.
10.Have fun – and enjoy the process! It’s amazing how much you will learn and grow and develop.

Happy writing!

Wasteland_Tour_Banner
The Wasteland
In another world, one far removed in time and space altogether, a timeless journey awaits. The path is steep, the road is long, and it encompasses a wild evil. Here, in a place entirely different from our own, we discover the lost remains of a once vast empire and a love story long forgotten.
In The Wasteland, set against a barren landscape, we find a terrified woman named Lylah. She races along the overgrown highways of a war-torn country, pursued by a deadly enemy. Try as she might, Lylah remembers nothing about her past or who she is. Without quite meaning to, she stumbles upon a sinister forest and a small tribe of people. They have dark skin and hair. They speak in thick accents. Nothing about them is familiar, but at least they’re safe.
As she struggles to unlock the keys to her past, Lylah falls deeply in love with this primitive way of life…a way of life she’s never known before. The tribe’s leader is a fearless man they call “Matteo.” He is formidable and abrasive, but Lylah is inexplicably drawn to him.
In spite of uncertainty, one thing remains: an evil force governs this rugged land. The Opposition uses its power to oppress the tribes-people and they are quickly closing in on Lylah. Will she summon the courage to face her past in time? Somehow, Lylah’s memories hold secrets that could destroy the Opposition and break its tyrannical power.

Destiny (Destiny #1)

Blurb:
Destiny Clark, a young Mormon girl living in Tennessee, is wildly infatuated with Isaac Robinson, the headmaster's son at her Baptist high school. When they're cast together in the school's production of Les Misérables, Destiny is horrified to find that she has to be publicly humiliated by acting out her true feelings of rejection onstage.

As their rehearsals begin, Destiny realizes the unimaginable: Isaac has developed deep feelings for her despite their religious differences and the fact that he has a girlfriend.

But will they be able to find their place amongst the backbiters of their ultra-conservative world?

Weaving around Destiny and Isaac's alternating viewpoints, Destiny is the first book in a series inspired by the characters of Les Misérables and explores heartbreak, self-discovery, intolerance, and love.

Favorite Book Characters

1. Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. She’s an incredibly strong woman. I admire how she stands up for herself when others try to put her down. She respects herself enough to marry only for love.

2. Ce’Nedra from the series The Belgariad and The Mallorean by David Eddings. She’s this fiery redhead human/dryad who knows how to wrap right person around her finger when she wants something.

3. Tobias Eaton from Divergent by Veronica Roth. He’s driven, hardworking, loyal, brave, and loving.

4. Finnick Odair from Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. His love for Annie makes me swoon. On the surface he seems cocky and overconfident, but his loyalty and compassion for Mags won my heart and my trust.

5. Samwise Gamgee from The Lord of the Rings. His loyalty and persistence is inspiring.

6. Aibileen Clark from the Help. Her deep love and kindness for the children she cared for is incredibly touching and influences me to be a more compassionate mother.

7. Eowyn from Lord of the Rings who fights the leader of the ringwraiths. She tells him “I am no man!” right before she kills him. That’s what most people remember her for, but what especially stands out to me is when she told Legolas that she should be allowed to fight because otherwise she would have been left defenseless against the evil men who would come to rape and pillage.

8. Sage from The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen. I’ve never read about such a clever, sneaky character. The way that kid’s brain worked blew my mind.

9. Celaena Sardothian from Throne of Glass. She’s the toughest assassin in the land, but still loves dressing up in frilly dresses and gorging on chocolate. But on a deeper level… Even though she’s a hardened killer, she still suffers from fears just like the rest of us.

10. Garion from The Begariad and The Mallorean. He’s a humble farm boy with a destiny beyond his imagining. I love how Garion feels like the guy next door. His character is very likeable. It’s fun to read about his growth throughout the two series.

Top 10 Books I Can't Believe I've Never Read

I’ve read a lot of books. But not these ones.

1.      Pride and Prejudice. Really, I should just say Jane Austen. Despite that I have a fancy bound copy of her collected works, I’ve never read any of them. Mr. Darcy and I are not acquainted.

2.      Jane Eyre, though I was supposed to have read it in high school. (But I have read Eve Mont’s A Breath of Eyre, which seems like a perfect substitute!)

3.      The Fault in Our Stars and Eleanor & Park. I own them both. But sad and I don’t get on so well together and I just haven’t worked up my strength to read either of them yet.

4.      Brave New World

5.      Lolita

6.      Fifty Shades of Grey and The Davinci Code. Okay, I can believe I’ve never read either of these, not because I’m too good for them, but because I tried and they’re just not my cuppa…but it seems like pretty much everyone else has, so I feel alien sometimes.

7.      The Book Thief. I own this one too.

8.      Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. When I was a young reader, I went straight from Sweet Valley High to Cujo. I skipped right over Judy Blume.

9.      Sinner. Only because it’s not out yet, and I still haven’t convinced Maggie to be my BFF/critique partner.

10.     Gone With the Wind

BLOG TOUR [Sneak Peek & Top Ten + Giveaway!] Revival (The Variant Series, #1) by Jena Leigh

Revival (The Variant Series, #1)
Author: Jena Leigh

Check out on Goodreads!
Purchase on Barnes & Noble and Amazon!

Synopsis: Possessing the uncanny ability to fry a television set from twenty paces can really wreck a girl’s social life.

If you’re looking for proof, just ask sixteen-year-old Alexandra Parker. After catching her boyfriend in the arms of the prettiest girl in school, she made the journey from social elite to social pariah in a haze of electricity and exploding electronics. But finding herself at the bottom of Bay View High’s social hierarchy was nothing compared to the shock of discovering who—and what—she really is.

After being zapped out of a burning bookstore by the mysterious Declan—a hero nearly as handsome as he is infuriating—Alex finds herself under the protection of the powerful Grayson family. It’s through them that she learns the truth: that the world she’s always known is nothing like it appears to be... and that she has far more in common with them than she might want to believe.

Now, on the run from a fire-wielding hit man and a secretive government organization, Alex must navigate a strange and treacherous new world filled with superhuman mutants known as Variants. As she begins to unravel the many secrets of her family’s past, she uncovers the real reason for her parents’ death twelve years earlier—and finds out that the threat to her family, and to everyone she cares about, is still dangerously real.

SNEAK PEEK
The fire swept toward her as if it had a mind of its own, a sentient being driven by a single goal: to consume her.

Alex reached the end of the row of books and turned left, the fire spreading, following, taking the corner and closing fast, licking at her heels as she ran along the bookstore’s inside wall.

The only exit she knew of was at the front of the building, the area surrounding it now a veritable inferno. In desperation, she fled to the rear of the building, hoping to find another way out.

A putrid gray smoke had thickened the air inside the shop, stinging her throat as it filled her lungs. The threat of asphyxiation now seemed as imminent as the flames trailing only a few feet away.

Reaching the back corner, Alex spotted a door leading to the shop’s storeroom. She tried the handle with no luck, finally kicking the base of it in desperation.

Taking as many steps back toward the flames as she dared, Alex got up a running start and slammed her shoulder into the very center of the wood.

A blinding pain rocketed through her arm, spreading from the base of her neck to the very tips of her fingers. With a yelp, Alex bounced off the heavy door and fell to her knees before it.

The door was locked tight. It wasn’t going to budge.

She looked to her left. Her only other option was a spiral staircase leading to the upper balcony. The second tier of the store offered more walls lined with books, but no visible exit.

Alex got to her feet. The glass-paneled bookcases set against the nearby walls were already alight. Soon even the staircase wouldn’t be an option.

Realizing that the approaching flames had effectively made the decision for her, she started up the stairs, the handrails already hot to the touch.

Alex risked a glance upward and her heart sank at the sight of what awaited her at the top of the stairs.

Dirty blonde hair. Hazel eyes. Gray military-style jacket.

She came up short, four steps from the landing.
The look on his face held just a hint of amusement. “Well?” He offered her his hand. “You coming?”

She hesitated, weighing her options. Risk running back down the flaming aisles to find another exit? Or trust the guy who’d been stalking her all afternoon?

The fire had spread to the nearby shelves. The heat was growing unbearable.

“You cut me deep,” he said. “You’d actually choose a fiery death over the prospect of my company. I have to admit, that stings a bit.”

She didn’t move.

His expression grew serious. “Trust me, Alex.”

Still uncertain, but more fearful of the flames than of the stranger before her, she took his outstretched hand—and very nearly dropped it in surprise. The sensation was… electric.

Literally. There was an actual, live current passing between their joined hands.

The flames were closing in.

Dismissing the odd sensation, she gripped his hand tightly and climbed the remaining steps.

Upon reaching the landing, Alex looked quickly for the exit through which the stranger must have arrived… and found nothing. How had he gotten there?

Alex came to a stop before him and tried to pull her hand from his. He wasn’t letting go.

“Ready?” he asked. The self-assured smile he’d worn earlier was once again firmly in place.

“For what?” she choked out, the mixture of heavy smoke and utter panic causing her throat to tighten. “There’s no door!”

“Door?” The smile grew wider. “Who said anything about using a door?”

Alex opened her mouth to reply—and instantly wished she hadn’t.

Before she could form a word in protest, the world around them had fallen away. The sound of thunder roared in her ears as a sudden change in pressure knocked the air from her lungs and forced her eyes closed.

Just when she felt certain that her body would soon do the impossible and turn itself inside out, it was over.

The pressure was gone… and she was falling.

Alex’s eyes burst open. She was eye level with the treetops and falling fast, heading straight for a dark body of water that stretched out below her.

A cry of surprise slipped from her throat.

The grip on her hand tightened.

Alex caught one last glimpse of her savior as they broke the surface of the water. He was still smiling.

TOP TEN
 CELEBRITY CRUSHES
By Author Jena Leigh

10. Colin O'Donoghue – Gorgeous Irishman playing a pirate? Um, yes, thank you. More please. I don’t usually go for eyeliner on guys, but Colin turned me into a believer. Could he be any hotter playing Captain Hook on OUAT? Love him!

9. Ben Nichols – This Lucero frontman can serenade me with those growled vocals of his any day. Lucero’s music has gotten me through more than a few rough patches in my life. Ben’s unusual voice + his inked-up, alt-rock persona = perfection.

8. Matt Muenster – Yeah. This is that point in the list where you stop, blink stupidly for a moment, and go, “Wait. What? ... Did she just name that guy from Bath Crashers?” and I nod sagely and say, “Yes, my friend. I totally did.” I’ve spent more than a few sick days these last few years, curled up on the couch, watching marathons of home renovation shows on HGTV. It’s been my experience that laughter is always the best medicine, and Matt never fails to make me laugh. There’s nothing more attractive to me than a guy with a great sense of humor!

7. Tom Hiddleston – Does this one really need an explanation? Always the perfect gentleman and by all accounts a total sweetheart. Plus, he’s British! Love.
6. Tom Mison – Speaking of my weakness for Brits (and, apparently, for guy’s named Tom…). I’d never heard of Tom Mison before discovering him on the Fox show Sleepy Hollow, but now I absolutely adore him!

5. Chris Evans – I have to admit, whether he’s saving the world as Captain America or fighting off super-villains as the Human Torch, Chris Evans makes for a pretty drool-worthy hero. And with all those superhero gigs, I suppose it’s a good thing he looks great in those tights.

4. Garrett Hedlund – My original inspiration for Declan! The scruff, that rumbling voice, his always-perfectly-tousled hair… And he can play the guitar and sing, too! What’s not to love?

3. Jensen Ackles – Don’t get me wrong, I love my Moose (aka Jared Padalecki, for the non–SPN fans reading this), but Jensen’s had my heart since the very first episode of Supernatural aired back in 2005. Another early inspiration for Declan, Jensen will probably always have a place on my list of celebrity crushes!

2. Karl Urban – Bones! I love watching him as McCoy. Truthfully, though… After seeing him in Star Trek, Almost Human, and the Riddick series—I guess I love watching Karl Urban in pretty much anything. His wry sense of humor and crooked grin always manage to sneak through, no matter the role. I can’t get enough!

1. Chris Hemsworth – There’s a reason this man was picked for the role of Thor. I mean, if there’s another actor out there who could more perfectly embody that particular Norse god, I’d love to meet him. In the meantime, if you need me, I’ll just be here, drooling over my favorite Hemsworth brother.

BLOG TOUR [Jeff's Top 10 List + GIVEAWAY!!] The Darkest Path by Jeff Hirsch

The Darkest Path
by Jeff Hirsch

Synopsis
USA TODAY bestselling author Jeff Hirsch once again creates a futuristic world with stunning, dramatic realism.

A civil war rages between the Glorious Path--a militant religion based on the teachings of a former US soldier--and what's left of the US government. Fifteen-year-old Callum Roe and his younger brother, James, were captured and forced to convert six years ago. Cal has been working in the Path's dog kennels, and is very close to becoming one of the Path's deadliest secret agents. Then Cal befriends a stray dog named Bear and kills a commander who wants to train him to be a vicious attack dog. This sends Cal and Bear on the run, and sets in motion a series of incredible events that will test Cal's loyalties and end in a fierce battle that the fate of the entire country rests on.

Things you would change about your high school years if you could go back in time.

1. My mullet
2. My unshakeable belief that a college education wasn’t something you really had to put that much thought into.
3. That day I had a ponytail
4. And wore a Les Miserables t-shirt (Full disclosure, this was a lot of days in high school)
5. That time I dated that person who wasn’t very nice to me for way longer than I should have.
6. My unshakeable belief that a powder blue Chevy Malibu was what people meant when they referred to a “bitchin ride”
7. Stone washed jeans
8. My rad collection of bolo ties.
9. My unshakeable belief that if I relaxed and had a little fun the world would come crashing down around me.
10. Did I mention the mullet?

I live in upstate New York with my wife and a small passel of animals. I used to write plays (I actually have an MFA in it, which is number 8 on US News and World Report's list of the top twenty most useless masters degrees) and now I write books for teens. I've written three, The Eleventh Plague, Magisterium and The Darkest Path.

A few random facts about me:
I’m incredibly superstitious.
I believe in baking as the ultimate stress reliever. I mean, sure, I write pretty good books but have you tasted my Triple Chocolate Espresso Cookies?
I’m deeply obsessed with the work of Joss Whedon, Stephen King, Bryan K. Vaughn, Prince and Tom Waits.
I started writing because of two women—Susan Cooper, author of the Dark Is Rising Series and Denise Stewart, my 7th grade English teacher.
