The Unhappening of Genesis Lee
by Shallee McArthur
Publisher: Sky Pony Press
Release Date: November 18th 2014
Synopsis:
Seventeen-year-old Genesis Lee has never forgotten anything. As one of the Mementi—a small group of genetically-enhanced humans—Gena remembers everything with the help of her Link bracelets, which preserve memories perfectly. But Links can be stolen, and six people have already lost their lives to a memory thief, including Gena’s best friend.
Anyone could be next. Which is why Gena is less than pleased to meet a strange but charming boy named Kalan who claims that they’ve not only met, but that Gena knows who the thief is.
The problem is, Gena doesn’t remember Kalan, she doesn’t remember seeing the thief, and she doesn’t know why she’s forgetting things— or how much else she might forget. As growing tensions between Mementi and ordinary humans drive the city of Havendale into chaos, Gena and Kalan team up to search for the thief. And as Gena loses more memories, they realize they have to solve the mystery fast.
Because Gena’s life is unhappening around her.
"Equal parts dark and delightful, McArthur's stunning debut takes an awesome SF premise and follows it deep into the maze of the human mind. I loved it so much I was jealous." – Dan Wells, author of the NYT bestselling PARTIALS Sequence
"A thrilling read from beginning to end, this stunning debut had me wishing I could record my memories to keep them safe! Just like Gena, I was desperate to discover the thief while at the same time hoping the story would never end." – Elana Johnson, author of the POSSESSION trilogy
Top 5 songs on your playlist?
For Genesis Lee, it was these five: 1. Iridescent by Linkin Park, 2. I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz, 3. Fear by OneRepublic, 4. Never Alone by Barlow Girl (that’s the one I picture Gena dancing to near the end of the book), and 5. All Fall Down by OneRepublic
How much time do you spend reading each week?
Depends a lot on the week! Lately, I’ve been super busy, but I’ve also been getting my hands on some fabulous ARCs, so my reading time has been a good chunk of time every week. Lots of hours spent getting lost in other worlds!
What is the last thing you Googled?
Baby names. Not because I’m having a baby, but because I’m coming up with names for a new book!
Favorite places to travel?
Ghana, West Africa! I’ve been there twice, and I’m completely in love with the country. The rich culture, the kind people, the gorgeous rain forests and beaches…it’s amazing.
What is your favorite way to spend a rainy day?
Hot chocolate. Seat where I can look out the window. Book.
Favorite TV Shows?
I’m into the oldies right now (thank you Netflix!). I’m rewatching several of my old favs—Star Trek: The Next Generation, The X-Files, and Angel.
If you had a time machine, where would you go (past or future) and who would you like to visit?
We can assume this is the TARDIS, yes? ;) I would go into the past and meet my great-grandmother as a young girl in the Netherlands. If the Doctor would let me…
What’s next on you TBR Pile?
In a Handful of Dust by Mindy McGinnis. I finally snagged a copy (and got it signed!) this weekend, and can’t wait to start!
Where is your favorite spot to read?
The comfy chair in my office. I can hear my birds chirping while I read (I have 2 zebra finches), which makes me a little extra happy.
If you were on Death Row what would your last meal be?
I’d probably feel too guilty to eat it if I was on Death Row, but my mother-in-law’s Greek chicken. She’s an AMAZING cook.
Favorite vacation spot?
Disneyland all the way!
Can we get a hint on what you are working on? What are your future plans?
I just finished another book, so I’ll give you a hint of what I’m doing next—it’s a fantasy set on a flat world. Though it’ll never be as good as Discworld. For the future, I plan to keep writing as long as stories pour into my head!
