"Why
does everyone keep sneaking up on me?” Skylee asked. "You scared me to
death! Why aren’t you wearing your shoes?"
"My
feet hurt," whined her sister. “I saw you leaving the reception and I...”
Somewhere
nearby, a door slammed making both girls jump. “Quick, get in here,” Skylee said
as she grabbed Chrism’s arm and pulled her through the door.
“WHAT
ARE YOU DOING? LET GO OF ME!” she yelled, jerking her arm out of Skylee’s grip.
“I just thought you might need help cleaning that mess off your
dress...Skippy.”
A
look of dread crossed Skylee’s face as she realized Chrism was planning to use
her nickname as ammunition to embarrass her. She shot her a dirty look and
said, “Funny, real funny.”
“Where
did you get a name like Skippy?” she asked teasingly.
“Airon
gave it to me when I was little because, well, he said when I tried to skip I
looked like a baby kangaroo jumping. Honestly, this isn’t the time.”
“Skippy
huh? Well, I guess it could be worse. You could be called—”
“Quiet,
please,” Skylee said as she looked around the room. The box still set on the
table where she left it. She ran into the closet and pulled open the file
cabinet, breathing a sigh of relief as she saw that her book was still hidden
under the papers.
“What
is wrong with you?” said Chrism as she stepped into the closet. “Are you like,
mentally disturbed and your mom just didn’t tell us?”
“No,
I—It’s just, I saw someone earlier, when I was in this room.”
“Saw
someone? In here? Do you think they took any of my stuff?”
“Focus,
Chrism, anyway, I was in this room and he-he was staring at me through the
window and then he came in the room and...” she fell silent when she heard
whistling coming from the hallway. “That’s the same tune I heard the man
whistle this morning,” whispered Skylee as she pulled the closet door toward
her, leaving a tiny crack so she could peer out into the room. She felt the
necklace warming through the fabric of her dress.
“Sounds
familiar. It’s a nursery rhyme, isn’t it?” asked Chrism in a hushed tone and
she began to hum the melody quietly.
“Oh
yeah, that’s ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’,” exclaimed Skylee softly.
“You’re
right,” she whispered in agreement. “I always thought it was a happy tune but
that’s just...disturbing.”
The
whistling grew louder as the door to the room opened and shut. She could feel Chrism’s
warm breath on her neck as she leaned over her to peep out of the crack. Skylee
turned and placed her finger over her lips, signaling her stepsister to be
quiet.
The
tall man stood in the center of the room surveying his surroundings. He
continued to whistle the haunting melody. Finally, after what seemed like an
eternity he stopped, went to the table, and he looked inside the box. Letting
out a string of curse words, he violently hit the package, sending it across
the room. Chrism gasped and dropped her shoes. Thunk...Thunk...The man spun around and approached the closet like
a lion staking its prey.
Peeking
out of the slight gap in the door, all Skylee could see was a pair of dark
empty eyes moving closer and closer.
