BLURB BLITZ + Giveaway: The Ashes That Remain By A.M. Griffin

The Ashes That Remain
By A.M. Griffin

BLURB:

We’re at war against the aliens that have invaded Earth, fighting the only way we can—by surviving. I have more than most people do, but although I know it’s stupid to hold on, I can’t let go of what might have been—can’t help dreaming of something more. No matter how I tell myself it would be easier to do what everyone else wants me to, there’s a part of me that can’t give in.

Making the best of the situation is one thing. Settling, even to make other people happy, is something else.

Then we hear the alien mother ships have disappeared. Of course we have to go and investigate. What we find lands us in a huge mess that we somehow have to clean up and, as our little enclave is rocked to the core with even more changes, I’m learning a hard lesson.

The more things change—for the better or the worse—there’s no fighting human nature, and building on the ashes that remain will take everything we have. And maybe more.

Excerpt

A dark brown object comes slowly toward us, traversing up and over the uprooted street. The body of the vehicle has odd lines to it, jagged and sharp—foreign—making it hard on the eyes. The wheels move on continuous tracks. With no visible windows that I can see I wonder how it’s being steered…then my thoughts wander to who is steering.

“Is it a tank?” I whisper, glancing to Rocky briefly.

Squinting, he continues to peer at the vehicle. “It’s not any kind of tank that I’ve seen. It looks odd.”

“Misplaced,” I add. “It appears as if it doesn’t belong here…not on Earth anyway.” My heart seems to fall. Just moments before we’d talked about the alien invasion being over. I let myself believe, just for a minute, humans could reclaim Earth. But now, seeing this thing on what used to be Woodward Avenue, with its dark color contrasting against the pure-white snow, I’m gripped with fear.

These things never plan to leave us.

They’re here to stay.

“What are they doing?” Rocky mutters under his breath, talking to himself.

“Why are they traveling in that thing, when they have spaceships?”

Rocky scrunches his salt and pepper brows together. “Spaceships are good at hunting down humans and transporting them to wherever. But that thing…”

“Heavy machinery.”

“They’re working now.” Rocky turns my way. His piercing eyes settle on me. “With humans gone, they are free to build.”

Rocky lowers his head and tugs on my arm for me to do the same. He takes his rifle from his back and holds it in his hands. I press my back against the car and reach under my coat to retrieve my pistols.
My heart beats so hard against my chest that I feel nothing but pain radiating around my ribs. Blood rushes with such force through my veins that I have to struggle to listen to the vehicle above the noise of it pumping past my eardrums.

With a flick of my thumbs, I release the safety on both guns. I’m breathing so fast and hard that my head begins to swim.

Pull it together.

I close my eyes, trying to steady myself.

“Ian and Jorin are at your nine o’clock,” Rocky says. “Try not to kill them.”

I crack open my eyes and cut them in Rocky’s direction.

“What?” he asks. “You think you’ll have a clear shot of anything with your eyes closed?”

True.

The vehicle comes to a screeching halt almost directly in front of where Rocky and I are hiding. We exchange quick glances.

Why did they stop here? Had they seen us?

I tighten my grip on my weapons. Although it’s cold, my palms are wet with sweat.

I turn around slowly, my feet crunching against the snow. Looking down, instinctively I try to step in the prints that I’ve already made…

Our footprints.

My eyes follow the trail of fresh footprints we’ve made in the snow. One set leads from the street to where we’re hiding. I nudge Rocky with my elbow, drawing his attention to what I’m seeing.

He doesn’t say a word, but his facial features twist with emotion. I knew what I was getting myself into when I pressed to come. There was always a possibility of encountering the aliens. There had also been a possibility of having to defend ourselves from them—the reason for the weapons.

I’ve got on my big girl panties.

I’m ready.

The Loving Husband Trilogy Box Set will please the most devoted James and Sarah Wentworth fans as well as fans new to the series.

Book One: Her Dear & Loving Husband

James Wentworth has a secret. He lives quietly in Salem, Massachusetts, making few ties with anyone. One night his private world is turned upside down when he meets Sarah Alexander, a dead ringer for his wife, Elizabeth. Though it has been years since Elizabeth's death, James cannot move on.

Sarah also has a secret. She is haunted by nightmares about the Salem Witch Trials, and every night she is awakened by visions of hangings, being arrested, and dying in jail. Despite the obstacles of their secrets, James and Sarah fall in love. As James comes to terms with his feelings for Sarah, he must dodge accusations from a reporter desperate to prove that James is not who, or what, he seems to be. Soon James and Sarah piece their stories together and discover a mystery that may bind them in ways they never imagined. Do vampires and witches live in Salem? Will James make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Sarah and prevent a new hunt from bringing hysteria to Salem again?

Book Two: Her Loving Husband’s Curse

How far will you go to protect the one you love?

Finally, after many long and lonely years, vampire James Wentworth's life is falling into place. Together with his wife, Sarah, the only woman he has ever loved, he has found the meaning behind her nightmares about the Salem Witch Trials, and now they are rebuilding the life they began together so long ago.

But the past is never far behind for the Wentworths. While Sarah is haunted by new visions, now about the baby she carried over three hundred years before, James is confronted with painful memories from his time with the Cherokee on the Trail of Tears. Through it all, the persistent reporter Kenneth Hempel reappears, still determined to prove that the undead walk the earth. If Hempel succeeds in his quest, James and Sarah will suffer. Will the curse of the vampire prevent James and Sarah from living their happily ever after?

Book Three: Her Loving Husband’s Return

What would you do to return to the only one you have ever loved?

Vampire James Wentworth’s secret is no longer a secret, and now he and his beloved wife, Sarah, have been separated. While suffering his own internment, James is reminded of his time with Japanese-Americans in the Manzanar Relocation Camp during World War II, and he cannot allow the past to repeat itself. With the help of his friends—Chandresh, Jocelyn, Timothy, even the irreverent Geoffrey—James learns what it means to return, and he is determined to return to his Sarah no matter the challenges—or the consequences. In the end, it may be up to Olivia, the most powerful of witches, to grant James’s most fervent wish. Will James and Sarah be reunited once and for all despite the madness surrounding them?

REVIEW

To read my review of the Book One: Her Dear & Loving Husband go here. Go here to read my review of Book Two: Her Loving Husband’s Curse.

I can't even begin to tell you guys how much I love this series. All of these books are filled with interesting historical facts and one of the the most beautiful love stories that I have had the privilege to read. All three times that I have begun one of these books, I have been sucked in to a flash of James remembering his experiences of historical periods that we only know in history books. It has been an enjoyable ride through history.

This book picks up where the last left off with all of the vampires being rounded up, just as the Japanese were in WWII and taken to holding camps which were a lot like the interment camps the Japanese were held in. I am a history buff of some sort and love reading about history in the fiction that I read and this one was so interesting. It was fun to read about James's time volunteering in the Japanese camp teaching the high school kids night classes. This is where he made a friend that would later come back as a grandmother to help James and his friends. The whole time James is at the camp, Sarah is finding out more and more about James past. And it was very colorful indeed. But no matter what he did, it was always to  helped people that desperately needed help. And then they in return were there for him when he needed them. That just shows you that you reap what you sow.

There is so much that I could say but I don't want to re tell the story for you. Meredith has written such an inspiring paranormal love story with a lot of underlying lessons that we could all learn. And the wonderful and not so wonderful at times, history if our country. This all intertwined with wonderful love story spanning hundreds of years. If you haven't started this series DO SO RIGHT NOW!! They are wonderful books!

INTERVIEW + Giveaway: MIRROR X by Karri Thompson

Title: MIRROR X
Author: Karri Thompson
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Pub. Date: June 23, 2014

I was born more than a thousand years ago.

Put into a cryogenic tube at age seventeen, forgotten during a holocaust that decimated the world, I've finally been awakened to a more serene and peaceful future.

But things at the hospital are new and strange. And it’s starting to scare me.

Everyone is young. Everyone is banded and tracked. And everyone is keeping secrets.

The cute geneticist Michael Bennett might be the only good thing in this crazy new world where “life is precious” but no one seems free to live it. The problem is, I don’t think he’s being totally honest with me, either.

When I’m told only I can save the human race from extinction, it’s clear my freeze didn’t avoid a dreadful fate. It only delayed the horror…

INTERVIEW

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
When I was little, I wanted to be a doctor. In fact, for Christmas I asked for the “Invisible Man,” and I got one. I’m not sure if they sell them anymore, but it was a 12-inch model of a man, and all of its muscles and organs showed through its clear, hard plastic skin. All of the plastic organs were also removable. The heart even opened in two, so one could see its chambers. I changed my mind about being a physician during my sophomore year in high school when I had to dissect a fetal pig. Yuk! I was immediately over that career choice. Because I loved to read and write, I ended up majoring in English at SDSU, got my teaching credential, and became a high-school English teacher.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
Oh, boy. The first thing I’d do was pay off my house, my credit cards, and then I’d buy a white BMW M6. That’s my dream car. I’m also really interested in helping disabled vets, so I’d contribute to the Wounded Warrior Foundation.

Print or Ebook?
I never thought I’d get used to reading e-books, but after I read one on a Nook, I was hooked. But if I read an e-book, and absolutely love it, I’ll also buy it in print, so I can sit it proudly on my book shelf.

What movie are you looking forward to this year?
I’m looking forward to seeing THE GIVER. I taught this book for many years, so I’m extremely familiar with it. I watched the trailer, and I already see some differences from the movie. For example, Jonas is older, and he has a love interest. This isn’t the case in the book. I’m a fan of Jeff Bridges though, and he plays the Giver, so I will definitely see this movie.

Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is....
THE HUNGER GAMES trilogy. Why didn’t I think of this? Love this series!

INTERVIEW

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Ooh! Um . . . wow, I have no idea! Probably flying or time travel. Hmmm . . . yeah, definitely flying. I’d like to see the world but plane tickets are ridiculous.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
I’d say positive reader feedback has been the most rewarding, though I still have trouble believing it. A little voice always pops up and says “they’re lying” . . . not sure why, but I’m hoping that will eventually fade, because hearing that someone loved your work and really understood your beloved characters . . . that’s something truly amazing.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
I think you should read DIVIDE because it’s a bit different than other fairytale retellings—I mashed it up with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!

Favorite food?
Pasta.

What book are reading now?
None. Well, I’m editing right now—eight books in my queue!—so I’m reading, just not books I’ve purchased. But, the most recent book I finished was TAKEN BY STORM by Tamara Mataya (swoony fireman alert! hello!) and my gorgeous signed paperback ARC of BLACKFIN SKY by Kat Ellis is sitting on my coffee table, waiting patiently for my full attention.

What’s your favorite season/weather?
Late Summer into Fall. Warm. I want sunlight, lots of it, period.

What was your favorite children's book?
The Giving Tree.

Beach or Pool?
Both! With all the warm weather I love so much, there’s room in my heart for both places!

What is one book everyone should read?
Oh wow, that’s a tough one. I can’t answer that because ‘everyone’ is such a broad spectrum. You know what? I’d love to hear reader feedback on this one. Any suggestions?

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Always! Next up is CHLORINE&CHAOS, an edgy erotic romance written under my pen name (Parker Jameson). After that, the third book in The Ever Trilogy, ENTWINED, will release in October. I have a few other YA projects in the works as well, and too many story ideas to count!

About the Author:

Jessa Russo believes in fairytales, ghosts, and Jake Ryan. She insists mimosas were created for Sundays, and that’s not up for discussion.  She’s obsessed with the great city of New Orleans—where she’s collected too many beads to count, eventually married her sweetheart, and visited graveyards they don’t include on maps.

She’s loud, painfully honest, and passionate about living life to the fullest, because she’s seen how abruptly it can be taken away.

What began as a desire for reading and writing young adult paranormal has bled into stories of all kinds. From fantasy to pre-dystopian to erotic contemporary, Jessa’s stories always include romance, though she’s given up on pigeonholing her work into a category or genre box.

Jessa was born and raised in Southern California, and remains there to this day with her husband (a classic car fanatic), their daughter (a Tim Burton superfan), and a Great Dane who thinks he’s the same size as his Chihuahua sister.
ENTWINED, the final installment of Russo’s Ever Trilogy, will be released later this year, as well as an erotic romance written under the pseudonym Parker Jameson, so please stay tuned!

Excerpt

Excerpt from Chapter One ~ Something Wicked

Deafening music shakes the walls, vibrates the floor, and pounds a rhythmic beat in my skull. Gyrating bodies turn every bit of space into a dance floor. Sweat breaks out on my forehead, and my heart races. Strobe lights flash, teens dance with wild abandon. Shrieking laughter bubbles around me.
“Gotta take a leak!” my dance partner shouts over the music.
He races off, weaving through the thick wall of bodies. Mike or Mick or something—I didn’t catch the name he yelled when he asked me to dance. Doesn’t matter, he wasn’t my type at all. I mean, the guy guzzled beer while dancing. After grabbing a diet soda from a nearby cooler, I’m about to search for my friends when a dark feeling washes over me. My feet refuse to move, and I stand rooted in place.
The once loud music is now hollow in my ears. I gasp for breath, choking on the lack of air around me. Tiny hairs on the nape of my neck rise to attention. Something wicked is behind me. I know I’m the only one here who feels a difference in air pressure. An oppressive weight presses against my skin, making me feel as though I’m underwater. I blink a few times, watching the people around me continue their manic dancing—oblivious to the bogeyman that just entered the room.
Afraid to turn around, I stand my ground, sipping my soda. I pretend I’m unaware of the shuffling noises behind me, sounds I shouldn’t be able to hear over the blaring music. Swaying my hips, I hum along with the music, trying to ignore the ominous presence crushing me.
Whatever it is, I can’t let it know I sense it. Evil pours off it in waves, blanketing the entire room. I close my eyes, willing the creature to go away, return to whatever mausoleum or grave it calls home. Malevolent spirits feed on fear. I must control mine at all costs.
When I open my eyes, I’m gazing into the face of an angel. Not literally, but he may as well be in my book. Logan glances behind me, and I know he sees the spirit. He doesn’t gasp or scream or faint dead away. His golden eyes narrow as though he’s in a staring contest with the specter.
“You’re not welcome here,” Logan says to the presence behind me. He meets my gaze again. “You know it’s there.”
It’s not a question but a statement. I nod, a weak bob of my head, unsure whether this intimate moment with my dream guy is a good thing or not. Meeting over a nasty phantom is not my idea of romantic. And yet I can’t stop staring at the way his blue t-shirt hugs his broad shoulders and chest—how his light brown hair curls around his earlobes. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. For six weeks I’ve wanted out of the friendship box with Logan, but I was hoping for girlfriend, not crazy girl.
“Kassandra,” a voice rasps behind me.
