Why in the world was Fed Agent Burton here? Everyone stopped working to watch him make his grand entrance. People don't usually parade around in a newsroom: They sort of shuffle or stumble or stomp—unless a story's really hot, then they'll run. I felt like running away too, but I stayed glued to my chair, pretending to work, my heart racing.

Burton seemed to enjoy the attention as he headed my way. He was hard to ignore: Standing before me, all six feet-plus of golden skin and hair, he towered over my desk. Looking up, I noticed the curious eyes watching us in the too-quiet newsroom. The reporters stopped typing, fingers poised over keys, hoping for a scoop. My boss stared with unabashed interest.

"To what do I owe this disturbance?" I adjusted my cloche cap, acting nonchalant.

He grinned at me, then looked around the suddenly still office. "I need to ask you a few questions. Can we go somewhere private?"

"What do you want?" I put on a brave face so the newsboys wouldn't see me sweat.

Burton scanned the hushed room. "You really want to discuss it here, out in public?"

He had a point. Did I want the whole staff listening in on my private conversation? He probably wanted to discuss Sammy, who was no one else's business.

"Let's go outside," I agreed. Head down, I followed him past a leering Hank, feeling like a naughty kid going to the principal's office.

Nathan entered the newsroom, a camera slung over his shoulder, stopping to stare at Burton. "Jazz, is everything jake?"

"Everything's berries." I smiled to pacify him but, I admit, I had the jitters.

"I remember him. Your boyfriend?" Burton seemed amused.

"He's the staff photographer." I ignored his crack. "And a good friend."

Outside, I felt safe among the throng of people and automobiles passing by in a rush. The hustle and bustle of the streets and sidewalks seemed almost comforting. I looked around for Golliwog, our resident stray cat, but she must have been making her daily rounds for scraps.

"How was lunch?" In broad daylight, Burton didn't seem quite as menacing or intimidating. Besides, a group of hard-boiled reporters peered out the newsroom, spying on us.

"Fine." I covered my growling stomach. "What brings you here?"

"Sorry to barge in that way." He smiled, tugging on his hat. "But I had to get your attention. You wouldn't give me the time of day the other night."

"Can you blame me? A raid isn't exactly the best way to meet new people."

"I think we got off on the wrong foot." He stuck his hands in his pockets, jingling some change. "Perhaps we can talk over dinner, instead of standing out here on the sidewalk?"

"Dinner?" Was he serious? "Just like that?" I snapped my fingers. "You waltz in as if you owned the place—like you did at the Oasis—and expect me to dine out with you, a total stranger, because of your badge? You've got a lot of nerve, mister."

"I wouldn't be a Prohibition agent if I didn't." He looked smug. "How about tonight?"

Ellen Mansoor Collier is a Houston-based freelance magazine writer whose articles and essays have been published in several national magazines including: FAMILY CIRCLE, MODERN BRIDE, GLAMOUR, BIOGRAPHY, COSMOPOLITAN, COUNTRY ACCENTS, PLAYGIRL, etc. Several of her short stories (both mystery and romance) have appeared in WOMAN'S WORLD.
A flapper at heart, she’s the owner of DECODAME, specializing in Deco to retro vintage items (www.art-decodame.com). Formerly she's worked as a magazine editor/writer, and in advertising sales and public relations. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Magazine Journalism. During college, she once worked as a cocktail waitress, a short-lived experience since she was clueless about cocktails. Flappers, Flasks and Foul Play is her first novel, inspired by real people and places. Instead of making the traditional post high school move and attending college, Susan joined the U.S. Army. She spent her eighteenth birthday in the gas chamber — an experience she is sure is best left for criminals.  For eleven years she served first as a human resources specialist and later as an Arabic linguist (mostly in Airborne units).  Though all her duty assignments were stateside, she did make two deployments to Iraq where her language skills were put to regular use.

After leaving the service in 2009, Susan returned to school to study history with a focus on the Middle East. She no longer finds many opportunities to test her fighting abilities in real life, unless her husband is demanding she cook him a real meal, but she’s found a new outlet in writing urban fantasy heroines who can.

Q & A With Author Jerel Law

Q: Describe your feelings when you opened the box and saw the first published copies of your very first book?

It was such a “wow” moment!  And very surreal.  All kinds of thoughts and questions flooded my mind.  I wonder if anyone will buy this?  It looks better than I thought it would!  And who in their right mind would trust me enough to print words I wrote onto actual pages?

It was a very rewarding experience.  Also, though, I realized quickly that it’s done.  The first one is finished.  It goes on the shelf, and we try to tell people about it and hope they buy it, and pray God uses the story.  But, it’s done.  So pretty soon after the fun and exciting thoughts, was the sense of, “Okay, let’s get to what’s next.”

Q: Coke or Pepsi?

Diet Mountain Dew. This delicious beverage fuels way more written pages than I’d like to admit.

Q: Soft shell or Hard Shell tacos?

Doritos Locos tacos from Taco Bell.  It’s a guilty pleasure.  (and they have fountain diet Mountain Dew…wow)

Suzanne is a freelance writer and author from South Africa. She currently lives in Finland and finds the cold, dark forests nothing if not inspiring. Suzanne is the author of the cyberpunk novel Dragon’s Teeth (Divertir), the YA science fiction novel Obscura Burning (Etopia) and has had several short stories published by Golden Visions Magazine, Space and Time and Niteblade. Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I grew up in South Africa, and after a brief stint in Australia where it was far too hot, I settled in Finland. Must be my Viking ancestors that make me feel at home in the snow and forests. After dedicating more than twenty years of my life to studying music, I started writing fiction and haven't looked back. I write YA and adult speculative fiction and am represented by the lovely Jordy Albert.

Can you tell us a little bit about your book?
Sure! The idea for Obscura Burning came to me while listening to the Friday Night Light’s soundtrack by Explosions in the Sky. I started with a character and the story grew from there, becoming a YA science fiction thriller far darker and grittier than I expected. I should probably warn prospective readers that this is upper YA and maybe not suitable for younger readers.

Your book’s going to be made into a movie, who would you cast in the leading roles?

Are you working on anything at the moment?
A YA science fiction novel about a girl and an android who share a passion for music. I’m also in the planning stages of a YA/NA novel involving Finnish mythology - it’s got a way to go still.

Why this genre(s)?
I love the creative freedom SF/F gives writers. My imagination can run riot, conjuring up the weird and wonderful without being fettered by current technological capabilities. I also enjoy the research that goes into my stories for the sake of verisimilitude. I do tend to stretch the possibilities of tech in my stories and mangle it with some fantasy but I want my worlds to remain plausible as far as possible.

What is the hardest part of writing in your opinion?
Getting past that 20k word mark. If I can break the 20k barrier, I’m usually ok. I think it was Neil Gaiman who said writing is just putting one word after the other - it’s as easy as that; it’s as difficult as that. Writing is hard work but I love it!

Is there a genre that you love to read, and would like to write, but just cannot?
Literary fiction. I love the dense verbose works by the likes of David Mitchell and Carlos Ruis Zafon but I don’t think I could pull it off. I prefer writing dialogue to exposition.

What is your favorite part of writing?
The moment an idea takes hold and makes you excited about the world, about the characters you’re about to create. I love that thrill as you start working out the back story and world building for a new story. I also love revisions. Getting through a first draft is laborious but once I’ve got words on the page I can get stuck in and fashion the story into something shelf worthy.

Soundtrack to the End of the World

Obscura Burning germinated from a singular image of a boy walking through an arid landscape - a landscape conjured by the ethereal strains of music unique to Explosions in the Sky. I first heard this band while watching the brilliant TV show Friday Night Lights. Explosions in the Sky (even as their suggests) provides the perfect soundtrack to the inexorable degradation of Kyle’s psyche and consequently his world.

You can tell by the track names that this band is a little different from the norm. I cannot get enough of them. There’s a sly reference to them in the novel itself when Mya makes Kyle listen to shoe-gazing music - yes, shoe-gazing is the official name of the genre.

A little bit about T.G. Ayer ...

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognize that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practice given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other's loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. What is one book everyone should read?

I’d have to say Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone.  It has character, humor, pathos, mystery, and is written in a language that readers young and old can follow without feeling it’s written for someone other than them.  It is complicated and yet quite simple.  It also has accomplished the great feat of getting non-readers to want to read.  It’s an amazing book for so many reasons.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

I would choose to fly.  Of all the super powers it is the most freeing.  Who would not want to soar among the clouds without the fear of crashing to earth?

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?

My mother’s mother—my grandmother—who died before I was born.  I know very little about my mother’s family except that at some point native Americans inter-married with freed slaves.  I see “Indian” names in my family tree and wonder how it all came about.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

I am not good at the elevator pitch, so let’s try this:  If you enjoy paranormal, you should read The Falling Angels Saga because reviewers tell me mine is a different take on paranormal and that it’s quite good.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published

I’ve been blessed to have been published for a long time.  One of the greatest feelings I can recall is going to the airport to pick up a friend, and stopping in one of the shops there and seeing my first novel taking up several spots on the paperback original wall.  Man, did I feel special.  I can’t say it was a rewarding experience, but it gave me the feeling that I had arrived, and that maybe I could do anything I put my mind to.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?

I read Casino Royale when I was 12 and got hooked on adult books.  I borrowed it from my father.  I also read a book called A Stone For Danny Fisher that I borrowed from my mother’s “locked” library.  After reading these I didn’t read another teen book until someone told me to read Judy Blume.  

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

I do live exactly where I want to live.  Southern California.  The best place to live in the world.

How did you know you should become an author?

I’d wanted to become a writer since I was 10 years old.  I can’t remember what told me this was my career choice.  For me, it was just something I knew.  Writing always seemed to be a part of me.  When I graduated college I started writing for film and television.  It was well-paying and rewarding, but I knew I would return to books.  Like I said, it’s just something I always knew.

Favorite Food?

That’s a tough question for a person who loves to eat.  I have to name two: red beans and rice, and pizza.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you bring?

My ipad for sure.  Even if there was no internet I’d have a boatload of good reads to keep my mind nimble until I was rescued… or the battery died.  I would also say pencil and paper—to write down my experiences… or memoirs.  If I was forewarned, I’d bring some fishing equipment along.  I love to fish, and what better way to pass the time than reading, writing, fishing… and sipping tequila.  I know you said three, but what the heck.  LOL.

Can you share a little about the current title you are working on?

Currently I am not working on anything.  I decided to take a little break to recharge my batteries.  I suppose when I finish recharging I will start writing the last book in The Falling Angels Saga.  This one will be different than the others as I have a feeling Megan turns into a dark character and maybe even consorts with demons.
