(The Second Installment in the Bestselling Zero Trilogy, a companion adventure story to The Collapse Series.)

Q&A with Summer Lane

Where did the inspiration for The Zero Trilogy come from?
I can’t say that it simply hit me like a lightning bolt. The character of Elle was the first thing that slowly formed in my mind – and then the storyline came after. I was writing The Collapse Series at the time, and I had just released State of Pursuit. I saw Elle in my imagination and I started working on a couple of different versions of a Day Zero manuscript over the summer. By the time August was over, I had a pretty good rough draft of the novel.

What is your favorite part of being a writer?
Being my own boss, and being able to make a living out of telling stories. I’ve always been hyper-self-disciplined, so running a publishing house is right up my alley. I have about 2-3 major deadlines a week, and I love the pressure. It’s stressful, but it’s exciting. I am happiest when I’m working on something.

Any new or upcoming projects?
Yes! State of Vengeance (Collapse Series #6) releases on June 26th, 2015. A yet-untitled and brand new Collapse project will release in August 2015, and End of Day – the last installment in The Zero Trilogy – will release October 9th, 2015.

In 2016, I have an entirely new series coming out, as well as continuing Collapse and releasing a standalone novel featuring one of the hit characters from Cassidy Hart’s world.

Q&A

Why a spin-off series? The MacKinnon Curse series is the series I’m most proud of, as well as a reader favorite. When the emails continued to come in asking if I was going to continue the series, I thought why not write a spin-off? When I wondered where to start, the character of Maddy just kind of leapt off the page for me. She’s one of those tortured souls that I love to write about, and plus, she’s psychic, so she was a perfect fit for this world.

Your books are considered horror and romance. How do you classify them? First and foremost, I look at my books as romances because the stories are about a girl on a journey, and that journey always includes finding love. I do love writing the scary bits though. 

So…you’re also a psychic medium? What does that mean exactly? Yes, I am. A psychic medium is someone who can communicate with those who have passed away. Like the character of Maddy (and Riley from The MacKinnon Curse series), I see, hear, and feel Spirits.

What’s next?  I’ll finish books two and three in The MacKinnon Legacy, and then I’m writing the third book in the Badboy Rockers series before I finish up my Otherworld series.

AUTHOR BIO:

J.A. Templeton is the YA/New Adult pen name for adult romance author Julia Templeton. A certified psychic medium, Julia enjoys research, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. Married to her high school sweetheart, Julia calls the beautiful Pacific Northwest home.

Q&A w/ Rebecca Rode

Q: Will you tell us about Numbers Game?

A: Absolutely! In the New Order Republic of America, 16-year-olds are given a Rating, a number that encompasses what they’re worth to society. It determines their career, living conditions, and potential partners. This is the story of Treena, who gets a different Rating than the one she earned. She decides to fight for what is rightfully hers, determined to get her boyfriend back in the process.

Meanwhile, she meets Vance, a mysterious prisoner-turned-soldier who has his own agenda. When someone tries to kill Treena—twice—they uncover a dark conspiracy that risks much more than Treena’s Rating.

Q: Great. You probably get this question a lot, but the concept is so unique that I have to ask—where did you get the idea for Numbers Game?

A: I love this question! My husband sent me to the bank to finalize the loan on the truck he was buying. I looked at my credit score and thought how strange it was that one number was supposed to incorporate everything about me—my purchase history, how reliable I’d been, whether they could trust me to make payments, that sort of thing. And then I thought how strange it was, that we as citizens are so trusting of the accuracy of that little number, and how important it is in our lives. It spiraled from there—what is someone was manipulating the numbers? What if the number included appearance and intelligence rather than just financial history? It didn’t take long for the plot to unfold in my mind.

Q: What type of reader would like this book?

A: I tell people that it’s like a thriller version of The Scarlet Letter, but set in the future. With bombs. And kissing. Dystopian fans who like Divergent, Hunger Games, and Matched would love it.

Q: Who is your favorite character and why?

A: At first, Tali was my favorite. She knows exactly what she wants and doesn’t put up with anything. But now that the book is done, I think Vance has overtaken her as my favorite. The way he sees the world and struggles to survive while torn between two worlds really resonates with me.

Q: What was your favorite part of the writing process? What was the hardest?

A: I really enjoyed taking an idea and running with it. Once I had the world solidified in my head, it was fun to explore all the different aspects of it—political, social, financial, emotional, etc. I wrote myself into a dozen corners because I was just having too much fun.

The hardest part? Probably the time it took to finish it. When I began writing Numbers Game in 2012, I was also juggling a journalism career and three kids, and then my nonfiction book was accepted for publication, so that took all my remaining hours. When my fourth child was born, everything came to a screeching halt for a while. It wasn’t until Numbers Game won first place in a statewide writing contest in that I decided to buckle down and get serious with it.

Q: Why did you decide to make it a series instead of a stand-alone book?

A: You know how some authors say that their characters grab hold of the story and steer it in a different direction without their permission? That’s kind of what happened here. It just couldn’t end with this book. There was so much more that needed to be explored. Besides, Treena had a little more growing to do, and I think you’ll love the person that she becomes.

Q: Thanks for joining us. Where can we find out more?

A: Visit my website at www.AuthorRebeccaRode.com or sign up for my monthly newsletter at http://eepurl.com/bdwUKL. I give away free stuff sometimes, if you’re into that type of thing. But remember, Numbers Game is only discounted on Amazon for a few days, so you may want to snatch it up quick.

BOOK BLITZ [Q&A + Giveaway!] Chasing Prophecy by James Moser

Chasing Prophecy
by James Moser
Publication date: January 2nd 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Thriller, Young Adult

Synopsis:
Mo is a shy teen just trying to survive high school.  He has secretly fallen in love with a girl named Prophecy.  Some people call her family a harmless hippie community.   Others call them a cult.  Desperate to keep their land, Prophecy’s family turns to the drug trade and tricks Mo into smuggling.  Prophecy flees the compound. She agrees to testify but disappears. Mo is devastated. When he is called to trial, the Family threatens to reveal his own drug trafficking. Mo commits to speaking out, though doing so will destroy his future.  Prophecy returns to help Mo kill the monster that her family has become.

How long have you been writing?

All my life, really.  I’ve always kept a journal, written short stories, that kind of thing.  Growing up, my mom drove us around in a lime green Pontiac station wagon with a broken radio.  On long car trips, mom or my siblings would ask me to make up stories, to replace the radio.  I’d look at the scenery and just start talking:  “The dead body was found in the K-Mart parking lot.”  And “The vampire looked for fresh blood in the Denny’s bathroom.”

How did you come up with this story?

I always wanted to build a story around someone or something like Boo Radley, my all-time favorite literary character.  I love how he dominates that book while remaining largely off-stage.   I looked around the Seattle area and the closest thing I could think of was our local legend of Bigfoot.   Once I had my own version of Nathan Arthur Radley in place, I started thinking a lot about monsters, especially monsters we make bigger in our imagination.  I also thought about Boo living in society without being a part of it, which made me think of different separatist groups turned into cults.   My young characters are based on bits and pieces of hundreds of former students.

        Where is Boulder Creek, Washington?

Like everything else in the book, it’s based on bits and pieces of lots of things.  There is no town called that.  Boulder Creek is where my wife and I hiked for our first date, in the foothills of the north Cascade Mountains.  The mountains in my book look like the ones around Darrington, in Snohomish County.  The main street is like Arlington (where I had my first teaching job).  The log bridge is something I remember from a family trip to Yellowstone National Park, 1,000 miles away.   People who have read Twilight will think Boulder Creek feels like Forks, which it does, because that’s what every small town in Washington feels like.  The Bethlehem compound is the boy scout camp I attended in northern Idaho, complete with the same wood carvings on the fireplace.

What was your mission in writing this book?

To entertain adults and inspire young adults.  Teenagers inspire the heck out of me, which is why I’ve been a high school teacher for so long.  I wanted characters who transform themselves to overcome obstacles, which is what I watch them do, every day!

If you had to explain your book in one sentence, what would that sentence be?
Real monsters don’t always hide in the woods.  Sometimes they turn out to be people we’ve known all our lives.  OK that was two sentences, but not bad, right???
    Nicely done.

 How about interests?  Hobbies?

Hitting refresh on Amazon’s sales ranking every 5 minutes.  That’s been fun lately!  Also, walking around with a silly smile on my face after our beloved Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl last weekend.  You should have seen the people running around the streets of our neighborhood.   It was CRAZY!!!     Hanging with my eight year old son, Zachary, and my lovely wife, Laura.   Reading and writing, of course.  Learning to ski.  Starting to suck less at it.

        New projects?

Yeah, I have a couple of things going on.  I don’t think I’m done with young people and Bigfoot so I’ve been considering some kind of epic quest trilogy with those characters.  The other thing I’ve been messing around with is a series of humorous essays (a la David Sedaris) about growing up, family, etc.

What’s been most exciting about the book, so far?

The fan reaction, both on my facebook page & e-mail.  Got my first couple of fan e-mails the other day—both from teens who know each other in New Zealand, of all places.   That’s where my literary revolution is going to start, people:  Down Under!

The author works with high school students because young adults inspire him. As such, he wanted to write about teenagers transforming themselves to overcome obstacles, which is what he watches them do every day. This book's mission is to entertain adults while inspiring teens.  The result is "Chasing Prophecy," a story about love, loss, redemption, and monsters.

Boo Radley is the author's all-time favorite literary character, which is how the Seattle-area legend of Bigfoot entered "Chasing Prophecy".

The author lives in Seattle with his beautiful wife and lively eight year old son. When he's not reading and writing, or talking about reading and writing, he's watching too much television and snacking on frozen treats from Trader Joe's. Man, those things are good.

BLOG TOUR [Q&A with Veronica & SANTA] Heartfelt Letters from Santa by Veronica Steck

A two-book gift set
Available this 2013 Holiday Season
Creating a Christmas tradition for families!

‘HEARTFELT LETTERS FROM SANTA’ STARTS A NEW CHRISTMAS TRADITION THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Author and mother of three Veronica Steck releases letter writing guide for parents

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – Little boys and girls all over the world traditionally leave milk and cookies for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, and some kids even write letters to the man in the big red suit, but what if he actually responded?

A proud mother of three, Veronica Steck is spreading the Christmas spirit with “Heartfelt Letters from Santa” new this 2013 holiday season. The two-book boxed gift set captures the magic of the cheery holiday and helps parents and relatives write letters to the kids in their lives on behalf of the big man in the red suit himself.

“Our children leave a letter for Santa every Christmas Eve, telling him to be safe, telling Santa where the cookies are, but mostly telling him they have been good (and to leave presents)” Steck says. “We then write a letter from Santa telling our children (through Santa’s eyes) how their year really went.”

Inspired by her family’s holiday tradition, Steck began writing “Heartfelt Letters from Santa” on Christmas Eve last year. She uses the letters to say things about her children’s’ behavior that year, pointing out areas they improved in, and ways they served others or acted in a humble way.

“We use the letters to motivate; we point out things we saw them do right, with the hopes of them doing more of the same in the next year,” Steck said. “We also point out areas we would like to see changes in (bickering with siblings, cleaning rooms, chores, better grades). We don’t just mention the big things; we bring up little acts of kindness and compassion they exhibited. We always try to mention things our children did not think we knew.”

“Heartfelt Letters from Santa” is an activity for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and anyone else who appreciates the value of encouraging children.

Steck lives outside of St. Louis, Mo. with her family. “Heartfelt Letters” is her first publication.

Veronica Steck on the long-lasting tradition of
“Heartfelt Letters from Santa”

“These letters will become more precious as the years go by, mainly because of who wrote them for the child. As adults, the children will look back and see not only who they were but most certainly see the love the author of the letter had for them. This book will be a keepsake for every child to share with their own children.”

Helping Santa Create a Tradition for Your Family

The magic of Christmas for children is embodied in Santa Claus. This book shows you how to capture that magic by writing a personal letter from Santa for the child or children who are special to you.

Letters from Santa can describe situations your child has been in, recount good deeds he or she has done, make suggestions for improving behavior, and generally inspire your child in positive directions you see for them.

The finely crafted companion volume is where you will write this special letter each Christmas Eve, after your child has brought their book of Santa’s letters to its honored place near the Christmas tree. On Christmas morning, the whole family can gather around as your child discovers what Santa has written just for them.

As the years pass the book with these letters will grow more and more precious. It will be a chronicle of years past, and a guide for years to come.

It will:
Transport both the child and the family back to the special moments in life,
Recap major events in the child’s progression to adulthood, and,
Remind children of how their biggest fans have stood with them and supported them, with loving, patience, and humor.

This guide for parents and adults will provide you with excellent ideas, key phrases, and topic areas to consider. It will clearly assist you in writing meaningful and heartfelt letters your child – and the whole family – will love.

Q&A with “Heartfelt Letters from Santa”
author Veronica Steck

How did this tradition of writing letters to your children from Santa Claus start?
Each Christmas Eve our children would leave cookies and milk with a note to Santa usually telling him how good they have been and to PLEASE leave presents. For many years my family had the children write Santa a letter and my husband and I would write letters to each child as if Santa had responded. We decided to leave a note from Santa with valuable feedback on how he saw their year. We added praise for areas where they had improved, as well as things they needed to work on. We also included statements about things our children did not know we knew. We pointed out their good deeds, as well as when they behaved with humility. We stressed gratitude for the things that they had, instead of for what they didn’t. As the children got older we added a bit of humor and a light sprinkle of sarcasm (usually about what was growing under their beds, etc.). I could see that I needed a resource to pull ideas from so that I could remember all the wonderful things our children had done throughout the year. I noticed that sometimes when we were in a hurry we missed things to mention and appreciate about our children. Last Christmas I decided that I must offer this book so that all the parents in the world would have this support that facilitates their encouraging and expressing gratitude to their own children.

What was it like seeing their faces the first time Santa responded to their letters?
They loved reading their individual letters from Santa. They usually read the letters out loud to everyone on Christmas morning. They were as excited to read Santa’s letters as they were to see what was left for them under the tree.  They were so touched that Santa knew them so well and they really appreciate the encouragement Santa gives them to work hard in school, use their manners, and become more compassionate children. They roared with laughter when Santa pointed out what their closets really look like.

Did you write letters from Santa Claus as a child?
Yes, I did!  I loved Christmas as a child and am still a big fan of Santa!

Does your family have any have any other Christmas traditions?
We have several Christmas traditions that span over a couple of states during our favorite time of year. We typically decorate the tree and our house right after Thanksgiving weekend. We love hanging ornaments that the children have made and ones that we picked out over time as a family. We always make sure while decorating to have Christmas music playing, a fire in the fireplace, hot chocolate, and eggnog. Another tradition is that we take a family photo with our two adorable dogs to send out as a Christmas card to family, friends, and clients. Our dogs have their own tradition and that is to make this endeavor as daunting as possible! Our favorite photos are usually the ones where our dogs are trying to escape from the shot! My family celebrates Christmas in Missouri and then again when we visit Texas for two weeks each year to be with my family.  Christmas is such a joy for all of us and when we visit Texas I relish everything I knew as a child there which I now share with my own family. We decorate my Father’s Christmas tree with ornaments we had when we were children and my sister and I recreate some of our favorite childhood recipes from our Grandmother. The best is Pecan Pie. We also help the children make Christmas cookies on Christmas Eve for Santa and of course we have to test them to make sure they are good enough for Santa.

What kind of treats does your family leave for Santa?
We leave homemade gooey cookies and ice cold milk right next to a letter for Santa each Christmas Eve, but I have to believe Santa appreciates any treat a child goes to the trouble to leave.

Christmas must be your favorite holiday. What makes that time of year so special to you?
Christmas is our favorite time of year. We savor the time together as a family. We reminisce about family members no longer with us that made prior Christmases beautiful and meaningful. We continue traditions and stories handed down to us to share with our children. Christmas reminds us that the blessings are not in the form of presents under the tree, but with whom we are able to share this miraculous day with.

One of the key goals of the book is for children to become kinder and more compassionate children. How does your book do that?
I really wanted to make sure to point out areas where the children showed how sweet and loving they had been over the previous year in the hope that they see that are valued and continue to be kind and even more considerate over time. The book also list statements and encouraging words for the areas the children can develop more skills by educating the children through uplifting and positive examples so that they learn to benefit themselves and to others when they behave in a kinder and more compassionate way. We remind our children to count their blessings, instead of their troubles.

Q&A with Santa Claus

How do you visit the whole world in just one night?
I stre-e-etch time.

Do you read every single letter kids write to you?
Yes, I love to read the letters kids write. I know they took time to write them during a very busy time of year. All children have GIGANTIC hearts and their kindness is displayed in their letters.

What’s your favorite Christmas song?
 # 1 Silent Night
#2  Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Do you ever get tired of cookies and milk?
My doctor would hope for a much different answer, but ABSOLUTELY NOT!  Most people count sheep, I count cookies when I have trouble sleeping.

How do reindeer fly?
Magic Dust is the key. I carry it with me every Christmas Eve. This is the same magic dust used to make My Letters from Santa books

What are you doing when it’s not Christmastime?
I oversee the elves while they make presents. Check the naughty and nice list on my computer.  I sing in my church choir with Mrs. Claus and the Easter Bunny.  Mrs. Claus and I love going to movies, usually every Wednesday night.
