BLOG TOUR [Top 10 Favorite Things + Giveaway!!] JUMP WHEN READY by David Pandolfe

Since he drowned, Henry has remained isolated with the same group of teenagers and he keeps wondering why. After all, what could he possibly have in common with a Mohawk-sporting punker from the 80s, a roller skater from the 70s with a thing for kimonos, and an English “rocker” from the 60s? Henry can hear the other groups but he never sees them. Soon, Henry learns that his new friends all possess unique skills for making themselves noticed by the living. Is Henry’s group kept isolated because of their abilities? If so, are they considered gifted or seen only as a potential bad influence?
Before Henry can reach any conclusions, he witnesses his sister being kidnapped. He knows who did it, where she’s being held and what will happen if the kidnappers don’t get what they want. As the police chase false leads, Henry comes to realize that he’s his sister’s only hope. But for Henry to even have a chance, he has to convince a group of teenagers that dead doesn’t mean helpless.

David Pandolfe has been a bartender in Seattle, the front man for an alternative rock band in Los Angeles and a college writing teacher in Richmond (among other things).
One day, it occurred to him that sometimes these experiences felt like completely different lives altogether. Which got him to writing Jump When Ready, a novel about of bunch of teenagers trying to get over their past lives while getting ready to jump into their next.
While he’s still writing about himself in third person, David Pandolfe should probably mention that at one point he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has had short stories published in Millennium and the Georgetown Review. Jump When Ready is his first YA novel but he’s currently working on another, to be released in the fall of 2013.

Top 10 Favorite Things with David

Favorite author (dead or alive)
I’m not very loyal, in that I love good writing and imaginative stories and just can’t pick a favorite writer to stay with for all time. So, my most current favorite writer is Robin Sloan. I recently finished Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore and loved everything about it.

Favorite Chocolates
Those little Ghirardelli squares that ooze caramel all over the place when you bite into them (you should just eat them in one bite).

Favorite books that inspired you to write
I used to read a lot of John Irving. He’s such a masterful writer who creates such fully dimensional characters. I don’t attempt to imitate him in any way at all (couldn’t if I wanted to), but I recall reading his novels and thinking, “Man, I’d like to give this a try just to see what happens.”

Favorite songs to listen to while writing
For one novel (to be published soon), I kept listening to Death Cab for Cutie “Bixby Canyon Bridge” as well as the rest of the Narrow Stairs CD. For a different book, it was Frightened Rabbit. “Swim Until You Can’t See Land.” The Jump characters are all from different eras, so I couldn’t choose one CD to go with there. It just would have been an insane playlist for writing.

Favorite destination to live?
I used to live in Seattle and still miss it ten years later (just not the rain). So, I guess that might still be my favorite destination to live. It’s a really cool city.

Musicians/bands/groups
We Are Augustines, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are among my recent favorites. I also have a soft spot for Coldplay. I saw the Viva La Vida tour and it was one of the most positive experiences I’ve ever had.

Favorite movies of all time
Pirates of the Caribbean (Johnny Depp always seems to be having so much fun with his roles). Elf, every Christmas, at least once, and it’s still funny each time. Donnie Darko, just for pure weirdness. Oh, just saw the new Star Trek and loved it!

Favorite TV program/series?
I really loved Merlin (just not the end so much).

Favorite movie moments
Captain Jack Sparrow: “Why should I sail with any of you? Four of you tried to kill me in the past. One of you succeeded.”

Favorite Super Villain
Megamind!

Favorite gadgets
My phone. Music, internet, email, books, all the other apps. Just ridiculously distracting.

Favorite dream destinations
I can’t believe I haven’t been to England yet. I know, cold, wet, bad food. But I want to see London soon. What’s with me and rainy cities?

Thanks David! It was great to have you visit today!!
