Enclave (Razorland #1) by Ann Aguirre

Enclave (Razorland, #1)

Enclave
 by Ann Aguirre

Summary: Goodreads

In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn’t like following orders. At first she thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.

As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known.

REVIEW

Wow...I almost forgot to review Enclave. It was one of those books that I bought the sample read it then really couldn't decide if I really wanted to read it. It wasn't one of those that was crazy good from the beginning. It built. But I ended up loving it.

Deuce was an awesome heroine. She had been trained to be a hunter who protected the tunnels from the "people eating mutants" and hunted to bring home other kinds of meat (rats things) to eat for the Enclave. Hunters were partnered together in twos, so enter the love interest, Fade. Fade wasn't born in the Enclave but he was found and trained and he was one of the best hunters out of them all.

There were hunters, builders, and breeders. I guess that pretty much covers everything in society. Everything from the old world had been destroyed and they were told they had to stay underground because they couldn't live topside. Fade and Deuce disobeyed and got banished to topside. Finding out that it wasn't "toxic" up there, like the Elders had always said. But there were gangs and other things up there that would kill them. Fade's dad had told him when he was little, about places the "survivors" had gone to when thing went bad. So that's where they were headed.

I loved the character development that you can see throughout the story. This is definitely one of the best dystopian books I have read and cannot wait until OUTPOST comes out!

It's definitely a must read!!

Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy #1) by Kiersten White

Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, #1)Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Summary (Goodreads)

Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shape-shifter, and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.

Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

REVIEW

My daughter recommended this book to me after I had begun to get into YA paranormal. I was excited to finally start on Kiersten White's universe because I have always heard great things about her. But I was a little disappointed of how "immature" I thought it was. Now remember I have a "40" *cough cough* something viewpoint, looking at this through the eyes of a teenager. (And it's been a while since I was a teenager.) :)

So to say the least it was a little childish to me. I could just see myself with my elementary students sitting around me after lunch reading it to them. And that's not a bad thing. I think they would love it. I'm in no way saying that I did not enjoy this book but I just feel it should be more of a middle grade read instead of a YA. I was even looking for pictures. :)

That being said I enjoyed Evie's "in your face" attitude, standing up to everyone. I loved the plot to the story but would have loved it to be a deeper story line. All the paranormal's were cool. I especially like Lish and Lend. I'm not sure if I will read the rest of the series, but my daughter will continue on with the Kiersten White universe.

Dearly, Departed (Gone With the Respiration #1) by Lia Habel

Dearly, Departed

Dearly, Departed
by Lia Habel

Summary: (Goodreads)

Love can never die.

Love conquers all, so they say. But can Cupid’s arrow pierce the hearts of the living and the dead—or rather, the undead? Can a proper young Victorian lady find true love in the arms of a dashing zombie?

The year is 2195. The place is New Victoria—a high-tech nation modeled on the manners, mores, and fashions of an antique era. A teenager in high society, Nora Dearly is far more interested in military history and her country’s political unrest than in tea parties and debutante balls. But after her beloved parents die, Nora is left at the mercy of her domineering aunt, a social-climbing spendthrift who has squandered the family fortune and now plans to marry her niece off for money. For Nora, no fate could be more horrible—until she’s nearly kidnapped by an army of walking corpses.

But fate is just getting started with Nora. Catapulted from her world of drawing-room civility, she’s suddenly gunning down ravenous zombies alongside mysterious black-clad commandos and confronting “The Laz,” a fatal virus that raises the dead—and hell along with them. Hardly ideal circumstances.

Then Nora meets Bram Griswold, a young soldier who is brave, handsome, noble . . . and dead. But as is the case with the rest of his special undead unit, luck and modern science have enabled Bram to hold on to his mind, his manners, and his body parts. And when his bond of trust with Nora turns to tenderness, there’s no turning back. Eventually, they know, the disease will win, separating the star-crossed lovers forever. But until then, beating or not, their hearts will have what they desire.

I Dearly, Departed, romance meets walking-dead thriller, spawning a madly imaginative novel of rip-roaring adventure, spine-tingling suspense, and macabre comedy that forever redefines the concepof undying love.

Review:

Like I stated before I had a hard time getting into this book but once I started I really enjoyed it. This was my first steam punk book and I wasn't sure how I would like it, but I will be reading more of them in the future. :)

I was on the fence about how many stars to give it 3 or 4. I decided on 4 but only because I enjoyed the story line so much. I DID NOT like how every chapter was another characters point of view. My ADD was about to take over and my head explode. (And I don't even have ADD!) I had to keep reminding myself and return to the first of the chapter to see who was actually talking in that chapter. I know Lia just wanted us to experience the story through each characters POV but it was very tiring to me.

That all being said YES I definitely want to read the next book and I'm excited to find out what happens to all the characters.

REVIEW

WOW *clapping hands* another awesomely written zombie book by Rhiannon! I need my towel and my Gatorade because the entire last half of the book I feel like I have run a marathon or maybe I've just ran from a herd of zombies *wiping forehead*. So much was happening I couldn't put it down.  So many zombies.... new territories...new people to the fort....I was on the edge of my seat (bed). *Deep breath* I feel like I need a breather *oxygen please* before I start the next book. This one ended with everyone ok (well at least those that where still ALIVE!!) I'm so scared of what might happen in the next book that I just want to remember them all as they are right now in my mind. :0)
